2012 is on track to be a record breaking year for hotel room rentals in St. Joseph County, and all the credit is being given to the success of the Notre Dame Football team.
The county imposes a six percent tax on room rentals and this year, it is projected to bring in more than $3.5 million, compared to $2.9 million in 2011. The same tax brought in 2000 the tax brought in just $2.6 million.
One percent of the six percent tax has historically gone to pay marketing costs at the College Football Hall of fame—but next year, the hall will be gone.
It has not yet been determined how the hall’s share of the Hotel Motel Tax pie will be spent in the future. That share totals $597,000 for 2013.
