One hundred football players were “teamed up" with one hundred students to go on a shopping spree at Meijer.
It's part of the Kelly Cares Foundation founded by Notre Dame Football Coach Brian Kelly.
Monday night one hundred football players were paired with one hundred underprivileged children from St. Joseph County. Kids were each given a one hundred dollar Meijer gift card.
The foundation donated ten thousand dollars for the students to go on a surprise shopping spree.
Students could spend the money on anything they wanted and many picked out presents for their family.
“That's the whole thing, you can see the excitement on their faces,” says Coach Brian Kelly. “Now they are not practicing today so they are a little bit more excited but just to get out and to be with kids and being part of the community, it's more than just playing the games. It’s about what they get out of it as well and helping kids.”
Football player Kendall Moore says, “I think that she taught me a little bit about how to shop so that was a good time, you know kind of learned a little bit and got me into the Christmas spirit.”
The children were from John Young and Navarre Middle School. They also had dinner with the team afterwards at Papa Vinos.
