ND football authority Joe Doyle dead at 92

The man who became a national authority on Notre Dame football and the history of the sports is dead at the age of 92.

The venerable Joe Doyle knew more about Irish football than anyone. A graduate of the University, Joe told it as it was and didn't worry about the consequences.

He broke more stories about Notre Dame football than anyone alive.

Joe was a lifelong friend of former Irish head coach, Ara Parseghian, and the pair had breakfast together on a regular basis. That would be unheard of in today’s media world.

Mr. Doyle was a class act in every way, shape and form. When I was just starting my career, Joe befriended me and we remained close over the decades. He once told me, “Jeffers, you’re OK. I think you may be around here for awhile.”

Our community has lost a giant who put his heart and soul into his profession and was recognized all over the country as THE authority on Irish football.

Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go to his wife, Doris Ann and the entire Doyle family
