Notre Dame officially became the #1 ranked team in the Coaches Poll and Associated Press around Noon Sunday.
But the celebration began 12 hours earlier.
Thousands of Notre Dame students poured onto campus late Saturday night and into Sunday morning after #1 Kansas State and #2 Oregon lost, propelling Notre Dame to the #1 ranking in the country.
Fans gathered at the War Memorial, best known on campus as Stonehenge. They danced, sang, and started plenty of chats of "We're Number One" and "We are ND."
"This means so much to us," says one Irish female student. "We're so excited to be #1. This is our year baby."
Notre Dame is 11-0 for the first time since 1989 after a 38-0 win over Wake Forest on Senior Day.
Notre Dame can book its ticket to the national championship game with a win over USC next Saturday at 8pm in Los Angeles.

Notre Dame is the unanimous #1 by the Associated Press, followed by No. 2 Alabama. No. 3 Georgia. No. 4 Ohio State. No. 5 Oregon.
The Irish received 56 of the 59 first place votes in the Coaches Poll. Alabama had two first place votes and Georgia 1.
