Irish fans took a time-out from all of their cheering inside Notre Dame Stadium to take part in a moment of silence in memory of Ziqi Zhang.
The 19-year-old Saint Mary's student from China was killed Thursday night when her bicycle collided with a car.
The crash took place in the rain, and in the dark, where State Road 933 intersects with the entrance to the college.
Zhang, who was described as nothing short of brilliant, was pursuing a dual degree in engineering at Notre Dame and mathematics at Saint Mary's.
Before Saturday's game, amidst all the traditional Irish fanfare, there was a more subdued and somber tone, as the crowd paused to remember one of their own.
“Ladies and gentlemen, prior to the presentation of our national colors, we ask that you please stand for a moment of silence in memory of Ziqi Zhang, a Saint Mary's College sophomore who lost her life in an accident Thursday evening,” announced Mike Collins the PA Announcer at Notre Dame Stadium. “A native of China, Ziqi was enrolled in a dual degree program, working toward degrees in mathematics at Saint Mary's and engineering at Notre Dame.”
A memorial service for Zhang will be held on Tuesday.
