Miami of Ohio hires Notre Dame's Chuck Martin as new head football coach

Brian Kelly won't be retaining his entire coaching staff like he did a year ago.

Miami of Ohio is hiring Notre Dame Offensive Coordinator Chuck Martin as its new head football coach, the school announced Tuesday. Martin will be formally introduced at a press conference on Wednesday.

“I am excited to be joining the Miami football family and want to thank David Sayler for this incredible opportunity,” said Martin. “I look forward to getting back to the excellence Miami stands for and am excited to hit the ground running.”

Martin will have some work to do getting Miami to an elite level. The Redhawks were 0-12 in 2013.

Martin won two national championships at the Division 2 level at Grand Valley State before deciding to join Brian Kelly's staff in 2010. Martin served as defensive backs coach for two seasons before taking over as offensive coordinator for the last two years. He took over play calling duties for this past season.

“Miami University made an excellent decision to hire Chuck Martin as its head football coach," Irish coach Brian Kelly said. "He is an outstanding coach, and most importantly, a better person. Chuck was a vital part of this program’s success over the last four seasons, which included four bowl games and last year’s run to the BCS National Championship game. He has provided tremendous leadership within a variety of roles over his career. Chuck has longstanding success as an assistant coach, coordinator and head coach, and will recruit with anyone in the country.”

It's unclear whether Martin will coach the Irish in a bowl game and if not, who will call plays. The assumption would be that Brian Kelly would just take over the playing duties again--at least for the Bowl game--if Martin does not stick with the Irish through the bowl game.

Martin has long been on the record as loving Notre Dame. It's the main reason he joined Kelly's staff as an assistant four years ago. That viewpoint hasn't changed.

"It's the one place in the world that I love more than any other place in the world in college athletics," Martin told Irish Illustrated. "For me, that's the hardest part by far. I love everything about the University and my time here."
