Johnny Manziel is the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy.

The Texas A&M quarterback edged Notre Dame's Manti Te'o to capture the 78th version of the most prestigious trophy in college football.

Manziel finished with 2,029 points, Te'o with 1,706 points and Kansas St quarterback Collin Klein had 1,706 points. The 1,706 points for Te'o are the most ever for a purely defensive player. Charles Woodson, who returned kicks and played some offense, is the only defensive player to ever win the Heisman.

Manziel finished with 474 first-place votes and Te'o had 321 first-place votes.

When Manziel won, Manti sported a big smile as patted Manziel on the back. Manti's dad Brian then shared a big hug with Johnny Football's father.

Te'o entered Heisman Saturday already with the most major college football awards of any player in history, having claimed the Butkus, Nagurski, Lombardi, Walter Camp, Bednarik and Maxwell awards earlier this week.

The Te'o Tour wraps up Sunday with the LOTT Award presentation in Newport Beach, California.

The Heisman Trophy was first given out in 1935 to Chicago's Jay Berwanger.

Notre Dame's first winner was Angelo Bertelli in 1943. Bertelli was followed by Johnny Lujack (1947), Leon Hart (1949), Johnny Lattner (1953), Paul Hornung (1956), John Huarte (1964) and Tim Brown (1987). Lattner, Hornung, Huarte and Brown were all in attendance.

Te'o led Notre Dame to its first unbeaten regular season since 1988, when the Irish won its last national championship. Notre Dame faces Alabama in the 2013 BCS Title Game on Monday, January 7th.
