Irish romp Navy despite possible tension between upperclassmen and coach Kelly

If Brian Kelly's comments to the media on Thursday comparing the players he recruited to the ones he did not, caused tension with his upperclassmen, then those players took it out on Navy instead of their coach.

Notre Dame bounced back from a loss to USC and TweetGate to stomp Navy 56-14 at the Stadium Saturday.

A source tells NewsCenter 16 that Kelly met with some of the players on Friday to clarify the situation and apologized. In his postgame comments, Kelly chose to say it was an in house matter.

"As a family, we all have good days and bad days," Kelly explained. "And you work through that as a family. And we had to work through some things this week."

"But at the end, like all families, if there's a disagreement, if there's any kind of need to communicate, it needs to get done and we did that. We communicated with each other as a team and as a family, and you saw it today. You saw a team that played together."

Guys like Manti Te'o, Braxston Cave and Trevor Robinson turned to twitter to express some displeasure with what Kelly had to say on Thursday night.

Multiple sources tell me that tension was high on Friday but calm down by Saturday's game.

Certainly, without twitter, the media and fans would not have heard the immediate feelings of those players. Even more so, Kelly and his coaching staff wouldn't have heard them either. In the old days, if those players had an issue, they would have vented to themselves or spoken to the coach directly.

Twitter is now causing immediate raw feelings to come out, a source said.

Here are some of the comments Kelly said Thursday that irked his older guys.

"It's more about how i want things done. About how I want this to play. And I haven't been able to get to play the way i want it play."

"It's not a buy in. They are all bought in. Every single one of them is all bought in. i coach a style of football that i want played. And we are not getting that style. A lot of the guys we are re-training."

Question: that's not a buying in issue?

"Oh no," Kelly said. "that's in their dna. That's who they are."

"You can see the players i recruited here. You know who they are. We've had one class of recruiting kids that I've had my hand on. The other guys here are coming along. But it's a process. It can't happen overnight."
