Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly has spoken to a number of Irish coaches who are very excited to be joining the Atlantic Coast Conference.
While Kelly's football program is not joining the ACC, they are forging a big relationship with the ACC that will result in the Irish playing five games each season against ACC opponents. Notre Dame also solidifies it's post-season plans as they will be a part of the ACC's non-BCS bowl picture.
The news has made national headlines although Kelly jokingly created what would be a monumental comment as he addressed the media on Thursday.
"I thought they said we were joining the SEC in football?" Kelly joked. "Oh, we're going to the ACC? We got that corrected? OK good. I used that joke in the staff meeting today with my football staff, they didn't laugh. There was no laughing."
"I think its a great relationship," Kelly continued. "When it comes to football, the tradition of independence becomes important. Then it becomes how do we solidify our post-season opportunities and now we have solidified our post-season opportunities with the ACC."
The Irish play four ACC opponents this season. They begin to play five starting in 2014.
