Kelly: October is for pretenders, November is for contenders

Notre Dame is 6-2 entering the month of November, a month that results in a high level of winning for a Brian Kelly coached team.

Kelly is 10-1 in November as the Irish head coach.

"October is for pretenders, November is for contenders," Kelly said Sunday. "This is the time to kick it into gear. This is the time you get to play for championships."

Notre Dame is 25th in the Coaches Poll but unranked in the AP Poll. That doesn't faze Kelly.

"We're still in pretty good position," Kelly explains. "We need to win more football games. we are only 6- 2. I think if we take care of business and keep winning football games, we're going to be fine when its all said and done."

The Irish will be favorites in the next three games against Navy, Pitt and BYU. That means the Irish could be 9-2 heading to Stanford, putting the Irish in position to play for a spot in a BCS Bowl.

And if history proves itself, the Irish should get that chance on Thanksgiving weekend.

So why are Kelly coached Irish teams so good in November?

"We focus on year around conditioning," Kelly says. "It's not a sprint, it's a marathon.

Kelly says the key is not overworking guys.

"We want to make sure the tank is full in November," he explains. "You can't try to win the battle in June, July, and August. You have to be lucky too--stay away from the injury situation."

Notre Dame's top star Louis Nix is among those currently injured. Kelly said Nix is questionable for Saturday's game at Notre Dame Stadium against Navy with knee tendinitis.
