The Irish football team will honor a former student manager on Saturday.
Anderson, Indiana native Xavier Murphy passed away two weeks ago of leukemia. He had been diagnosed just one month prior. Xavier was just 22.
Murphy served as a student manager for the Irish for the last two seasons.
Football players Braxston Cave and Harrison Smith sported "Raise an X for X" shirts on Wednesday in support of their fallen friend.
Cave spoke fondly of Murphy, saying, “Always a great person to be around, willing to do anything for you, always had a smile on his face, cracking jokes. He is definitely going to be terribly missed, just a great, typical Notre Dame guy.”
A special ceremony for Xavier is scheduled for Saturday. It would have been his 23rd birthday.
The football team will also wear a decal on its helmets for the rest of the season.
