Irish football lands 5-star linebacker from Fort Wayne

Manti Te'o has turned out to be a huge success at Notre Dame. Now Brian has landed the man who could be his heir apparant.

And the Irish didn't have to go all the way to Hawaii to get this 5-star linebacker.

Fort Wayne's Jaylon Smith chose Notre Dame over the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and USC. Smith was a fantastic running back and linebacker as a junior, leading Bishop Luers to the 2A Indiana State Title.

Smith is considered the top linebacker in the country in the recruiting class of 2013 and the 4th best overall player in that class.

Smith made the announcement Saturday night and said the lure of staying close to home at a great institution just made a ton of sense.

"I would be dumb to not go to Notre Dame," Smith said.

He says he saw previous Fort Wayne standouts John Goodman and Tyler Eifert choose Notre Dame over the biggest schools and he didn't understand why at first. Then he visited campus.

"There is no where like Notre Dame," Smith continued. "Down there is like a family. You want to be in a locker room you can trust and I'm really looking forward to the transition of Bishop Luers to Notre Dame."

Smith is happy to have the decision out of the way well before the start of his senior season.

"It takes tremendous pressure off of me. I have about 2,000 letters in a box."
