Irish running back Theo Riddick gets emotional after final game

After weeks of build-up and anticipation the fighting Irish took on the Crimson Tide Monday night for a chance at the title.

Alabama came out swinging putting up 28 points in the first half as they would roll on to win 42-14 and end Notre Dame's perfect season.

“When you get pasted 42-14 you can do one of two things”, said WNDU Sports Director Jeff Jeffers. “You can wallow in your pity or you can learn from it. I happen to think Brian Kelly is going to take this loss and teach his team what it needs to do to get and stay among the elite.”

“We gotta get physically stronger, you know, continue to close the gap there,” said head coach Brian Kelly. “And just overall, you need to see what it looks like. You know our guys clearly know what it looks like. And when I say know what it looks like, [I mean] a championship football team. You know they’re back to back national champs.”

As you can imagine the Irish locker room was pretty emotional, especially for Theo Riddick. Angelo Di Carlo had an emotional interview with Riddick about his final game. As he fought back tears, Riddick called the loss heartbreaking and reflected on what being on this team means to him.

“Just means the world, man. Like they say you never appreciate things until it’s gone,” Riddick said. “The university has done more for me than I ever imagined. These guys in this locker room, they’re like family, and it’s just going to be hard to say goodbye to them.”

From the field you could see a shift in the crowd from excitement to frustration and disappointment as the game went on, many just hoping for some kind of miracle to turn it all around. Still fans tell us they wouldn’t trade this experience for anything and they’re proud of their team.

“Experience of a lifetime, this is my senior year, to have a season like this even though it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, couldn’t have asked for anything better,” said Notre Dame student and Irish fan Shawn Matthews
