Golson hates the laces, Manti hates golf, Diaco promises to get a haircut

The Irish are having a little more fun at practice.

With Sir Mix-A-Lot blasting on the speakers, Notre Dame began practice on Wednesday.

"Jump on it. Jump on it."

Yep, music during warmups---part of the benefits to players to make the grind of camp run smoother.

So if they are having fun, why shouldn't we. Coach Kelly seemed to enjoy himself when I asked about the state of the quarterback situation.

"Ang, Ang, Ang," Kelly said. "You are the only one I'm going to tell. It's just going to be a 1-on-1. Not a 2-1. Just a 1-on-1. You and I --Jeffers won't be there."

I like this secret all access. So let's find you some more nuggets that you can't get anywhere else.

"I never throw with the laces if i don't have to," declared sophomore quarterback Everett Golson.

What? The potential starting quarterback at Notre Dame doesn't throw with the laces of the football?

"No, if I don't have to--I won't use the laces," Golson reiterated. "There's many times--how many people shuffle the ball to get the laces out--I shuffle the ball not to get the laces."

Then there's Tony Alford--the coach with a thousand titles--running backs coach, slot receivers coach, recruiting coordinator.

"That's impressive," Alford said with a smile looking at his name tag. "It's a good looking title. That's a lot of words."

Speaking of coaches--Defensive Coordinator Bob Diaco has grown out the hair. By my fellow Italian isn't making a fashion statement.

"I just haven't had a chance to get a haircut," Diaco explains. "I intend to my first chance. I promise everyone at Notre Dame that I will get a haircut."

Then there's Diaco's prized pupil Manti Te'o. We know he does just about everything perfectly. So I wanted to find out---what does Manti stink at?

"Manti isn't very good at golf," says safety Zeke Motta.

"Rapping," fellow safety Jamoris Slaughter adds. "He cannot rap."

Manti's reaction?

"I'm horrible at both," the Irish linebacker admits. I'm horrible."

Then came a hilarious rant that sounded more like a disgruntled wife.

"I really don't like golf," Manti began. "Robby Toma and Carlo Calabrese really increased my dislike for golf. This whole summer, all they would do is golf. And they would be gone. They wouldn't be home all day and they would come back late at night. You guys just wasted a whole day golfing. I can't stand that."

And there you have it.
