In a conference with UConn and defending national champion Louisville, not many would expect a 5'8" sophomore from Winona Lake, Indiana to have a shot at making the all-conference 1st team.
But as he's done his entire career, Warsaw alum Nic Moore is again defying the odds. The SMU standout point guard was selected Tuesday to the American Athletic Conference 1st team.
The Illinois State transfer has shined under legendary coach Larry Brown, who says Moore has been battling through injuries as of late. Moore leads the Mustangs in scoring (13.9 points per game) and assists (4.7 assists per game) this season, guiding SMU to their first Top 25 ranking in three decades.
The 2011 Warsaw grad was runner up for Mr. Basketball in Indiana during his senior season with the Tigers. In 2010, Moore led Warsaw to the 4A State Finals as a junior.
SMU (23-8, 12-6 American) will open its American Athletic Conference Tournament against sixth-seeded Houston (16-15, 8-10) in the quarterfinals at the FedExForum in Memphis on Thursday at 1pm on ESPNU. SMU swept the season series against the Cougars. The Mustangs earned the three seed in the tournament, their best conference finish since finishing third in the 2002-03 Western Athletic Conference standings.
