500 wins is a major milestone, but legendary Michiana high school basketball coach Dan Gunn will never forget his 499th.
Buchanan's Jalen Brown tied the game at 69 with five seconds remaining in Michigan's Class B District opener at St. Joseph High School Monday night and Gunn figured his Edwardsburg Eddies were destined for overtime.
But Josh Kozinski had other ideas, throwing up a 38-foot near half-court shot at the buzzer that touched glass and dropped in.
Edwardsburg wins 72-69. The celebration was rather epic and deservedly so. Kozinski finished with 18 points. The Eddies go for win number 500 for Coach Gunn Wednesday at 6pm against Lakeshore in the district semifinals.
The other semifinal will feature Benton Harbor and Berrien Springs. The Tigers beat host St. Joseph 55-49 in the other opening game at the Bears Den Monday night.
Also in Class B but North on 94 in Coloma, Dowagiac rolled over Parchment 63-45. The Chieftains will face South Haven Wednesday night at 7 at Coloma. The host Comets beat Plainwell 67-48. Coloma faces Paw Paw Wednesday at 5:30.
In Class A at Niles, the host Vikings won a thriller Monday night 68-66 on their home floor over 2-time defending state champion Kalamazoo Central. Niles will host Mattawan at 7:30 Wednesday night.
