The stars aligned for St. Joseph baseball Saturday.

Heading into the regional tournament, the Bears seemingly had the toughest path to the state quarterfinals. Their first draw was a top-ranked Gull Lake with only two losses on the season. With a win in that game, a likely match up with four-loss Wolverine Conference champion South Haven loomed.

But the games aren't decided on the paper bracket. On the diamond, St. Joe did what it needed to do; the Bears dispatched Gull Lake 6-5 in eight innings.

In the day's second game, South Haven held a 5-0 lead over Coldwater in the late innings before losing a thriller 6-5 in 10 innings. Less than an hour later, a likely fatigued Cardinal squad took the field against a hungry, well-rested St. Joseph team.

The result was a staggering 14-1 triumph for the Bears. A solo home run by Riley Johnson got the action started in the second inning St. Joseph never looked back.

The Bears will take on Chelsea in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday, June 12.
