Riley Athletic Director 'outraged' after being placed on administrative leave

The South Bend Community School Corporation has placed Riley Athletic Director Walt Ballard on administrative leave. Multiple sources tell NewsCenter 16 that a sexual harassment complaint was brought by the Riley girls swim coach against Ballard.

Ballard says he's not allowed to discuss the allegations against him but says he's been told very little about the specifics of what he's been accused of.

"it's more than not right, i don't know what is going on," Ballard tells NewsCenter 16.

He was told Wednesday afternoon that he would be placed on leave while an investigation occurs. He says he has yet to hear from anyone to give his side of the story since that time.

Whatever the extent of the allegations, Ballard says he denies them "110 percent."

"It's not true," Ballard said. "I'm offended by being accused, it's just not right. I'm angered, outraged over the way this is being handled."

School corporation spokeswoman Sue Coney confirmed Ballard is on leave. She said sometimes an individual is placed on leave before an investigation is fully conducted. Coney said she could get into specifics on the matter because its a "personnel issue."

Ballard took over as the Riley AD in July of 2009 for Jay Dow, who served in the role for just one year following the retirement of long-time Riley AD John Berta in 2008. If Ballard is ultimately out, his replacement would become the 4th Riley Athletic Director in three and a half years.

Former Riley Principal Ed Bradford recently announced his retirement after he was placed on administrative leave back in September. Coney said the cases are not related.
