Looking to reach Semi-State for the first time since 2007, the Penn baseball team came up two runs short.
The Kingsmen lost 3-1 Saturday night at LaPorte to Lake Central in the 4A Regional Final. Penn manufactured a run in the 2nd inning after a bunt single by Chad Gindelberger got the rally started. But the Indians scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning and held off the Kingsmen the rest of the way.
It was a big difference from the regional semifinals earlier in the day where Penn picked up 20 hits in a 14-5 win over Valpo.
indelberger was 3-for-5 with 5 RBI in the early game and Kyle Richard was 4-for-5 for the Kingsmen in the victory. Tyler Thompson gave up two unearned runs in 6 innings of work for the win.
Lake Central reached the finals by defeating Elkhart Central 2-1 in a pitcher's duel in the other regional semifinal.
Cory Malcom gave Elkhart Central a 1-0 2nd inning lead on a solo home run off Jimmy McNamara. With the game tied at 1 in the 6th, it was a solo blast from Chase Fieldhouse that put Lake Central up for good.
McNamara--set to play at Central Michigan next season-- gave up just the one run in a complete game effort, striking out seven for the win.
Elkhart Central junior Tanner Tully gave up two runs in six innings of working also striking out seven. He got the loss.
Marian was knocked out of the 3A state playoffs with a 4-2 loss to Western in the regional Semis at Plymouth Saturday afternoon.
