Penn High School grabbed seven places in State Swim meet Friday

Wawasee senior Brittany Robinson is seeded No. 1 in two events and Penn’s Bethany Galat had the fastest time in the 200 individual medley Friday night as the Kingsmen grabbed seven places in the championship finals at the state high school meet on Saturday, including the No. 2 seeded team in the 200 freestyle relay.

Galat, a sophomore, enters the championship finals as the top seed in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.94 and the third seed in the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:55.08. Teammate Sarah Coyne is seeded sixth in the 50 free (23.82) and 100 free (51.81) finals, while sophomore Annie Spalding is seeded No. 7 in the 100 breast, setting a school record with a time of 1:04.20. In the 200 relay, Galat, Emily Meckstroth, Jenn Priebe and Coyne put up a school-record 1:35.81 as Carmel narrowly edged them with a time of 1:35.67. Penn also is seeded fifth in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:30.53.

Robinson, who will swim at Louisville next season, had the fastest time in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.42 and tied for the top time (55.34) with Carmel’s Alexis Bullard in the 100 backstroke. Her sister, Breanna, a freshman, is seeded second in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.20 and third in the 100 free at 50.89. Wawasee senior Kayla Allen is seeded 14th in the 100 fly. Wawasee also is seeded 12th in the 400 free relay.

Other area swimmers advancing to Saturday were Concord’s Audra Burtch, who is seeded fourth in the 500 freestyle and 14th in the 200 IM; LaPorte’s Carly Jackson

tied for eighth place in the 100 fly, but lost a swim off so she’s seeded first in the consolation finals.
