Niles, Lakeshore, Bridgman win boys hoops district titles

For the first time in a decade, the Niles Vikings are District Champions in boys basketball.

Niles used an 18-0 to close out the 1st half en route to a 67-40 win over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in the Class A District Championship Friday night at Niles.

The Vikings jumped out to a 9-2 lead before the Knights tied it at 13 after one quarter. Niles was up 18-17 when they scored the final 18 points of the half to lead 36-17 at the break.

The 2nd half was all Vikings, which celebrated its first district championship since winning three in a row from 2000-2002.

Niles advances to Regionals Monday night at 8pm at Portage Northern.

In Class B, Lakeshore led from start to finish but had to hold off a 4th quarter from Benton Harbor to capture the district championship 51-45 at St. Joseph.

The Lancers 13-8 after one quarter, 25-15 at halftime and 39-29 heading to the 4th quarter. But Benton Harbor didn't go away, pulling within one late in the game.

Lakeshore hit some huge free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

In Class B at Coloma, the host Comets were no match for South Haven, falling 65-34.

Coloma trailed 14-7 after one quarter, 27-13 at halftime and 50-23 after three quarters.

In Class C at Watervliet, Brandywine couldn't make it two district titles in one night for the town of Niles.

The Bobcats took a 4th quarter lead in the final minute of the game but Bridgman quickly answer, hitting a huge three to win it 39-37.

In Class D at River Valley, Covert beat Michigan Lutheran 89-86 in overtime.
