Heading into the 2012 New Prairie had only 2 wins in 8 years against the LaPorte Slicers. One of those wins was by a forfeit in 2008. Last year the Cougars exploded for a 42-14 victory in Russ Radtke's first game as Head Coach.
This season the Cougars will try to make it two straight victories, something they haven't done in roughly two decades.
Coach Radtke lead his team to a 9-2 record, an undefeated regular season and three games where they scored more than 50 points. They were knocked out by South Bend Washington in sectionals by a score of 36-14
This year Coach Radtke really likes how hard his team has been working and the depth he has across the board. He says the team knows how big this game is.
Radtke said "I know it is going to be a good ball game, for the fact that its LaPorte and New Prairie are going at each other in LaPorte county. And its for the championship of this corner. "
Coach will also be using this game as a chance to get a good idea of their depth which he says will be vital in figuring out how they will approach the rest of the season.
"The biggest thing we have got leading up to it is that we have got a good 75 kids that are willing to play football. Hopefully in that ball game we will be able to get 45-50 guys in that ball game. I really think that we can."
New Prairie and LaPorte kick off August 23rd at 7pm.
He added "It is a little bit of an opportunity to see exactly what we can do as we get further into the season when we are going to have to depend on a lot of alternates and so forth helping us out. I mean they have worked hard all summer. They deserve a chance. I'm not just going to pick out the 9, 10, 11 best football players and play football with them."
