New Prairie is looking to make it three straight wins over rival LaPorte when the high school football season opens on Friday.
The Cougar's head coach Russ Radtke is entering his third season with the school and is yet to lose to the Slicers. In Radtke's first season New Prairie rolled to a 42-14 victory. Then last year, his second season, they added 6 more winning 48-7.
For the Cougars, getting to play their rival in week one makes camp move just a little bit faster and gives them a chance to make a statement early.
"It is right off the bat and I think it keeps us motivated throughout the summer," senior linebacker Dan Cinal said. "You have got to go out there show them what you have got and send a message to the other teams"
New Prairie gets to open up the season at home in front of their always loud and passionate fans. Add that with the extra adrenaline that comes from playing one of your biggest rivals and you have got a recipe for a great week one match up.
"I think it brings a little bit more to the table and as a result of that we will see our players, as well as LaPorte's, play a little bit more aggressive in that situation," Coach Radtke said. "Just for the bragging rights to see what is going on."
Kickoff between the Cougars and the Slicers is set for 8 p.m. (EST) at New Prairie high school.
