When the Penn girls basketball team battles North Central in Semi-State on Saturday, there's no question who will be leading the way for the Lady Kingsmen.
Western Michigan bound Alex Morton excels at a lot of things on the basketball court, but there's one thing she's not very good.---she just can't seem to get rattled out there.
"I try not to," Morton explains with her bright smile. "I know my teammates look up to me, so I have to stay calm and set an example for everyone else so that everybody else can stay calm too."
Even her fellow seniors look up to her.
"I can take examples from her all the time," laughs senior Tori Milliner. "I never doubt her. She has so much confidence and is a great leader."
Milliner has known Morton since they were in 6th grade. She says Alex has always has that poised personality. It makes her a coach's dream.
"She's such an unselfish leader," says Kingsmen coach Kristi Kaniewski. "If someone wants to take her out, she's willing to make the extra pass to find the open teammate and completely trusts them. She's really made an impact on this program."
Morton doesn't just trust her teammates, she loves them.
"Every single of these girls means so much to me," Morton explains. "They are like my little sisters basically. i do my best to take care of them and be the leader they can look up. Each one of them has helped me make so many memories."
There's one memory left to create--another shot at the state championship. that comes if the Kingsmen can win Saturday. Penn lost to Jeffersonville in last year's 4A state finals, 43-29.
"It would be awesome," Morton explains of getting another chance to win it all. "That's been our goal since the end of the season last year coming off that loss in the state championship. We've wanted to get back there so bad. Now that the game is in reach we just have to win on Saturday."
Penn will face North Central just after 6pm in the 4A Semi-State Saturday at Warsaw.
Make no mistake--the Lady Kingsmen will be ready---their unquestioned leader wouldn't allow anything less.
