Mischler leads Marian into boys basketball regionals

For the first time since 1969, the Marian boys basketball team will play in regionals when they square off against Gary Wallace at 10:30 Saturday morning at Plymouth.

And almost immediately everyone turns their attention to star junior Demetrius Jackson as the reason why Marian has made it this far.

But Marian coach Robb Berger has another major asset to turn to in sharp shooting senior Robert Mischler.

"He makes me look pretty smart, no doubt about it," Berger says with a smile about Mischler.

Smart? Yeah. Mischler is definitely that.

He turned down appointments to two service academies and next season will play basketball in the Ivy League at Cornell.

"It's a great honor to play at Cornell," Mischler explains. "They were just in the sweet 16 two years ago. It's always been my dream to play in the NCAA tournament. I'm looking forward to going to Cornell after this year is over."

"it couldn't happen to a greater young man," Berger says. "Great kid, great student, great person off the court. I think he's shown the last couple of years he's an outstanding basketball player as well."

Mischler's been an all around Marian athlete, serving as the team's quarterback in the fall. He gets his athleticism from his mom, Karen Bauters, who was an All-American volleyball player for the Knights and went on to play at Notre Dame. Robert says she's been a big help to him as his dad, who has always helped Robert with his shot.

While he's excited for Cornell, Mischler isn't ready to give up high school sports. He's not ready for his career to end. He's shooting for Marian's first ever regional championship on Saturday.

"We need to take advantage of this opportunity because it doesn't come around often," Mischler says. "We haven't won a sectional in 43 years so just to keep practicing right now means a lot."

Mischler would love to keep practicing next week. It would mean, Marian is moving on to Semi-State.
