Memorial, Marian fall in Boys Basketball Semi-State

Elhart Memorial and Marian each made incredible double digit comebacks Saturday, but each came up short in the boys basketball Semi-State.

Memorial lost to Carmel 62-59 in 4A while Marian fell to Norwell 76-67 in 3A. Both games were played at Huntington North High School.
Urston Smith scored 20 points and Todd Johnson added 17 but both were on the bench after fouling only to watch Elkhart Memorial come up just short, falling 62-59 to Carmel.

After trailing by double digits since the 1st quarter, Memorial had possession of the ball down one with 11 seconds left. Backup point guard James Hershberger, bringing the ball up the floor with Johnson on the bench, turned it over and just 0.4 seconds remained when the Chargers managed to foul.

Carmel made both free throws and Memorial's pray did not pan out.

Memorial trailed 37-25 at halftime, but immediately took control early in the 3rd quarter--closing to four points heading to the 4th.
Demetrius Jackson scored 29 points but it wasn't enough as Marian's historic season came to an end in the 3A Semi-State with a 76-67 loss to Norwell Saturday afternoon at Huntington North High School.

The Knights were in Semi-State for the first time ever. Norwell now heads to the state finals for the first time in school history.

Marian trailed 25-11 after one quarter when David Vogel hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Marian closed to within 12 after three and made their big run in the final five minutes of the game.

Michael Whitfield hit a huge three to get Marian within eight and the Knights pulled within four on three different occasions but could never get closer as Norwell pulled away in the end.

Memorial is currently playing Carmel in the 4A Semi-State.
