Marian girls soccer team in search of better results in state finals

Ask Gabby Veldman what it will feel like to finish her career as a state champion and Marian's all-time leading scorer in girls soccer will likely not be able to find the words.

Veldman sat out the first six games of the season due to a torn ACL suffered in the spring. There was no question she was going to make it back, after all--she was on a mission.

So are the rest of her teammates.

The Knights head to Indianapolis Saturday where they will battle Providence for the 1A State Championship. Providence is the team that beat Marian for the state title last year. And it came in heartbreaking fashion in shootout.

"This year we are definitely coming back 10 times harder," Veldman explains. "Now that we have one [state title game appearance] under our belt, we will come back even stronger."

There's no question this team isn't just happy to be returning to the state finals.

"Last year, we said, 'let's win sectionals.' then we went to regionals, got all excited and said 'oh my we're at semi-state," explains Marian head coach DJ Charmat. "Then the excitement starts building up and we go to state."

"Now we know where we are supposed to be going. We know our target and objective. So we're going to go to the finals and hopefully make it happen. We are going to take care of business."

Marian and Providence battle at 1pm Saturday in Indianapolis.
