John Glenn/ Elk. Central likely to forfeit football victories

There are fumbles on the football field and fumbles off the football field—and both can cost a victory.

It appears that two northern Indiana high schools will be forced to forfeit some past wins because of player eligibility violations.

Three of the four violations involved transfer students who were not properly documented. When a student athlete switches from one school system to another, they must sign a form swearing that the move was not made for athletic reasons.

No such paperwork was filed on behalf of two members of the Elkhart Central Football team.

At John Glenn High School in Walkerton, one violation involved an undocumented transfer student, while the other involved a student who played—despite being academically ineligible due to poor grades.

“No, it’s not an intentional thing, it’s a, it’s an error. People make mistakes. We made them. We have to stand u p and say we made them and unfortunately the hardest part of it is to say to students and groups of students that mistakes were made and particularly when it impacts them,” said John Glenn Principal William Morton.

Elkhart Central’s football team is two and four on the season. John Glenn’s is three and four. The Indiana High School Athletic Association will soon decide how many of those victories are in jeopardy because of the violations.

“John Glenn will forfeit all the games in which those students participated,” said Robert Faulkens, Assistant Commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. “That’s normally what happens.”

Wednesday marked the deadline for schools to submit their sectional rosters to the IHSAA. The violations were discovered during that process.
