Investigation into alleged Mishawaka wrestling incident continues

Members of the Mishawaka High School wrestling team are still under investigation. The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office is still receiving new information in the alleged sexual assault involving students.

The prosecutor’s office said that they are receiving new information and that investigators continue to conduct interviews.

But, while investigators analyze the facts, the Mishawaka High School community is faced with a harsh reality.

A school rocked by an arrest Friday.

“Everyone’s talking about it,” Mishawaka High School graduate Jeffery Roper said.

“There’s rumors going around the high school like crazy,” Mishawaka High School student Jessica Rodgers said.

Five suspects involved in the alleged sexual assault of a wrestling teammate.
And, the accompanying police report blind sighted some Mishawaka parents.

“It was crazy,” Jaimie Wheatbrook said. “With everything going on in Niles, then Lakeville...We never thought it would happen in Mishawaka.”

The reported incident dates back to 2010 – the same year that the team won the state championship.

Now, one student is in custody and the man behind the team, coach Darrick Snyder, has been suspended.

Ii didn't see this coming, especially from coach Snyder because I was actually in his class with him,” Roper said.

The Mishawaka Schools superintendent had no further comment on Snyder's employment.

Parents tell me that they have not received an official update from the school regarding the investigation.

“We hear rumors through the high school about certain things going, hear different things from the news, but nothing to what is actually going on,” Wheatbrook said.

There are also questions as to how much the coach knew about the alleged incident.

But one of his previous students tells Newscenter 16 that he doesn't believe Snyder could be guilty of wrongdoing.

“He was a completely stand-up guy,” Roper said. “I have nothing bad to say about him. And, i don’t think he’s in the wrong.”

Snyder has led the Mishawaka wrestling team to the state title twice.
