Friday Night Football: Penn, Washington, St. Joe, Bremen headed to Semi-State

The Penn Kingsmen football team is headed to Semi-State after a 20-3 win over Crown Point Friday night at Freed Field in the 5A Regional Final.

But that score was no where indicative of how close this game was.

Penn coach Cory Yeoman knew it would be a defensive showdown against the Bulldogs. That's exactly what it was as Penn trailed 3-0 at halftime..

The Wild Bunch defense set up the Kingsmen for success in the 2nd half. Nick Moldonado booted two field goals to give Penn a 6-3 lead. The 2nd came after a Penn interception.

Another Kingsmen interception put the Penn offense at the 1-yard line but Zach Oakley fumbled the ball away and Crown Point recovered. The Kingsmen defense stuffed Crown Point, which punted away. Matthew Wirick then took that punt and zig-zagged his way for a huge touchdown. Officially it was 35 yards, but Wirick may have ran more like 70.

Penn will host Fort Wayne Snider in the 5A Semi-State next Friday at Freed Field. Penn beat Snider 31-13 earlier this season.

In 4A, South Bend Washington is headed to Semi-State for the first time since winning the state championship in 1973.

A 60 yard touchdown run from David Perkins in the 4th quarter sealed the game as the Panthers won at Hammond Morton 33-20.

Washington led 21-7 at halftime, but a pair of Perkins fumbles allowed Morton to pull within a single score. That's when the Panthers stepped up their game and held on for the win.

Washington will go on the road next week to face undefeated Leo for a spot in the 4A State Championship game. Leo defeated NorthWood 24-12 at Andrews Field for the regional title.
