An all-around dominant performance lifted the Coloma softball team to a regional title Saturday with a 1-0 win over Lakeshore in the final.
The Comets stole the momentum right away with a spectacular diving catch by Chelsea Carotenuto to end the first inning. The ball, on a line to left field, seemed to pop out of Carotenuto's glove at the last second, but she never allowed it to touch the ground.
Great pitching on both sides held the game scoreless through three frames, but in the fourth, shortly after a Coloma coach uttered, "If we get one (run), it's over," Lexee Summers cranked a two-out single to score Megan Garrod who had amazingly hustled from first to third on a bunt the play before.
Despite some late-inning threats by Lakeshore, the Coloma survived and will play in the state quarterfinal against Flat Rock on Tuesday, June 12.
