Clay hires Colonials legend Cornell as new girls head basketball coach


South Bend Clay High School announced the hiring of Jaraan Cornell as the new Head Girls Basketball Coach, Thursday morning after his approval from the school board.

Cornell is a teacher at Clay High School and coached junior varsity boys basketball for the past three seasons.

Cornell, hit “the three point shot” in the 1994 IHSAA championship game to send it into overtime against Valparaiso in which the SB Clay Colonials won 93-88.

​He was a two time NIC MVP and a 3rd team Parade All-American. Cornell, continued his career at Purdue University in which he helped lead the Boilermakers to four NCAA appearances. He was a two time 3rd Team Big Ten selection. ​He holds the Purdue University record for most three-point field goals made in a career.

"SB Clay High School is excited about having one of its basketball hero’s in a position to develop young ladies off and on the court," Clay Athletic Director Joe Toth said in a press release.
