Central, Memorial taking different approaches to Mangy Lion rematch

For the first time ever, Elkhart Memorial and Elkhart Central will meet in the postseason in football.

The rematch for the Mangy Lion will take place Friday night at 7:30 at Charger Field. Both teams enter the contest at 4-5 looking to advance the 5A Sectional Semifinals.

Both Kevin Downey at Memorial and Levon Johnson at Central are in their 2nd seasons as the head coach of their respective schools. Both know a win Friday would mean a ton in the momentum of their programs moving forward--even beyond this year. But both are taking different approaches in how they are treating this game.

Downey embraces the Mangy Lion rematch. He feels facing Central is a great and exciting that will again energize all the players and fans. He likes that aspect of this game and that his players have the opportunity to be a part of history--in the first playoff game between the two schools.

Johnson, meanwhile, looks at things differently. For him--the Mangy Lion doesn't matter this week. He feels his kids don't need any extra motivation. Simply knowing your season is over if you lose should be a motivation enough, Johnson says.

The Memorial-Central winner will face either Adams or Penn in the sectional semis.
