Tony Stewart will not race at Plymouth Speedway this coming Saturday and has also cancelled his autograph session and Q&A with fans set for Thursday at the Newton Center in Lakeville after the tragic events that took place over the weekend at a dirt track race in Central New York.
Stewart got into a wreck with 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr late Saturday night. The race went under caution and Ward got out of his car and started pointing and approaching Stewart's car as Stewart and others continued to drive around under caution. Stewart's car then struck Ward. Ward died shortly there after.
Stewart did not race in Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen.
"We at Plymouth Speedway extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Kevin Ward Jr. and thoughts and prayers to Tony Stewart and his family," Plymouth Speedway said in a statement. "Tony Stewart will not be racing at Plymouth Speedway this Saturday. More information on the weekend's racing will be announced this week."
The Bob Newton Classic will go on as scheduled despite Stewart not appearing.
If you purchased tickets for the autograph session and Q&A on Thursday, contact the Newton Center at 574-784-2749 to find out how you can receive a refund.
"We at Hoosier Racing Tire, Newton Center and Newton Park extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Kevin Ward, Jr. and our thoughts and prayers to Tony Stewart and his family," the Newton family said in a statement.
