The Lady Irish collect sympathy cards for Newtown

Sometimes a soft word can lift a spirit, and that’s the message the Notre Dame women’s basketball team wanted to pass along to its fans Monday. The Lady Irish encouraged anyone attending Monday’s game to bring handwritten sympathy notes for the families in Newtown, Connecticut.

Cardboard boxes were placed at the entrance to each gate of the basketball arena for fans to fill with words of sympathy and support. Fans of all ages felt touched enough by the team’s sentiment to bring a note to the game.

“We said we are sorry for your loss and we hoped you had a happy holiday,” said Areli Toney.

Ruth Banner said she was touched by the women’s efforts, “I thought it was very sweet that they did that. When they came to my house, they had their cards ready.”

The team plans to deliver the notes to the town when they travel to the east coast the first weekend in January to play the University of Connecticut.
