Dale Sveum didn't lose his sense of humor after a rough first season as Cubs manager.
As Sveum gave his opening speech at spring training, Chicago's players peeled off jackets and jerseys to reveal orange hunting gear. It was a playful jab at their manager, who was accidentally shot during the offseason while hunting quail with Hall of Famer Robin Yount, a close friend. The players also gave Sveum an orange vest.
He took the joke in stride, saying maybe it showed "they didn't want to lose me in a hunting accident."
The Cubs lost 101 games under Sveum last season. But the team stayed free of controversy and general manager Jed Hoyer said most of the credit should go to the 49-year-old Sveum.
