For the last 22 years, Chris Godfrey has called Notre Dame home. He's lived a rather peaceful life here thanks to the fact that he's a Michigan grad in Irish territory, he jokes.
Godfrey's son John was the starting center on the South Bend St. Joe football team, leading the Indians to the state finals each of the last two years.
Chris has a claim to fame in football too. 25 years ago, he was the starting guard for the New York Giants when they won their first ever Super Bowl.
The Giants defensive coordinator at the time was Bill Belichick, now the famous head coach of the Patriots---who will face the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI Sunday in Indianapolis.
Godfrey, an offensive player, remembers a special moment after the Super Bowl win that he shared with Belichick, a defensive coach.
"Just coming up to me and saying, 'hey thanks for everything you did this year--you did a hell of a job for us,'" Godfrey remembers Belichick telling him. "That meant a lot to me because I knew he was a cerebral guy. And he's a passionate guy and still a young guy and he's a defensive guy and had nothing to do with what I was doing."
"I know the defensive side of ball--those players were long suffering waiting for an offense to compliment their fierce defense. And they had it that year. That compliment has stuck with me and is one of the feathers in my cap."
We'll hear more from Godfrey and his memories of being a part of that Super Bowl Champion team in 1987 on Thursday on NewsCenter 16.
