South Bend, Ind. For the 3rd time in its program's history, the South Bend East Side softball team is headed to play in a World Series.
The Under 12 softball squad won regionals last week in Ohio to qualify for the Babe Ruth World Series in Gainesville Florida, beginning on August 1st.
"To get to this platform that we are on--it's the highest platform you can strive for," head coach Tom Gillis explains. "And that's what we've worked on for years. I've had some of these girls since they were five-years-old."
"We're really excited to have the experience and to represent South Bend," says East Side pitcher Lauren Sandor. "We're going to go big and make it far."
East Side has made it big before. The program won the Little League World Series back in 2004. This group wants to do the same.
"We all want to make some noise and win this," says centerfielder Grace Gillis. "We all want to have fun in Florida and make a memory we can enjoy."
The trip to Gainesville for players and coaches isn't cheap. They estimate it will cost around $10,000. They've already raised $3,000 but can certainly use any assistance anyone is willing to give.
