Skylar & Irish women's hoops team show big support for football

At every Notre Dame football home game this season, Skylar Diggins and the Irish women's basketball team are sitting in the front rows of the student section cheering on their fellow student-athletes.

Last Saturday, Muffet's Squad did so in Los Angeles. By pure coincidence, the Irish women played UCLA on the day before at Pauley Pavilion. While coach Muffet McGraw departed that night for a recruiting trip, the players and some assistant coaches stuck around to watch the football team play USC.

When Manti Te'o and company defeated the Trojans to complete a perfect 12-0 regular season, it was Diggins in the front row leading the Notre Dame crowd in chants of "We are ND."

""It's such a big deal--Notre Dame is such a great football school," Diggins explained Wednesday. "You see them lose close games and now they have a hold of things and are in the driver's seat to control their own destiny. It's such a great feeling as a Notre Dame student--a sense of pride. And as an athlete too--because you know what they are feeling--the pressures they are feeling and what they are going thru--we are so on each others side."

The National Championship game is January 7th in Miami. The women's hoops team plays January 8th in Tampa. So could Muffet's Squad sneak in a trip to South Beach the night before to cheer on the football team again?

Doesn't appear that way.

"You know what--it's a four hour ride from Tampa to Miami, the game is kind of late and we play the next day---I don't think we will be going in person," Irish hoops coach Muffet McGraw explains. "I think we will be watching on TV."

But how much are the players already trying to convince coach?

"oh definitely," McGraw says with a big laugh. "They are already working on that."

"I'm like, 'coach--We play the 31st and don't play again and have a break until the 8th, maybe we can get down there.'" Skylar recalls telling her coach in her plea."

"We're playing USF and it's like a 4-hour drive or something like that. If we can't make it. We'll be hovered around the TV to watch it."
