It was quite the celebration Monday night at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium as the South Bend Silver Hawks are headed to the Midwest League Championship Series.
Brandon Drury drove in four runs including a 3-run homer to spark a 5-run 5th inning as the Silver Hawks defeated the Fort Wayne Tincaps 9-5 Monday night at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium to win the league semifinal series in three games.
"it's exciting for the team," said the 21-year-old Drury, who was 2-for-5 with 4 RBI. "It's been a fun season. To go to the championship is going to be fun and I hope we win it all."
Longtime Silver Hawks Manager Mark Haley was drenched with Gatorade as the team celebrated on the field following the win.
"i'm so proud of them," Haley said. "I'm so proud we got to bring this to the community and everybody. It's been a great season. A lot of good fans. We had them out tonight and that's outstanding. You know we are going to be back and come on out."
The tributes to Haley didn't end there. As he continued to answer questions from NewsCenter 16, he was caught by surprise when one of his players got him with a towel full of shaving cream.
"A rather jovial bunch," Haley said with a big smile and laugh as he wiped the shaving cream off. "It's been great. These guys are great. They deserve it."
The Hawks will now host games one and two of the best of five championship series on Wednesday and Thursday night against the winner of Beloit and Quad Cities. Games 3, 4, and 5 will be on the road.
Fort Wayne rallied from a 6-1 deficit to pull within a run after scoring three runs in the 6th and one in the 7th.
With the Hawks clinging to a 6-5 lead in the 8th, Socrates Brito cleared the bases with a 3-run triple to seal the victory for South Bend.
