If not for one player on the opposing team, the outcome may have been different for the Silver Hawks who lost 7-5 on Wednesday night.
Rock group Tesla sang the national anthem before the Hawks faced the Lake County Captains at the Cove, but it was Lake County first baseman Joe Sever who stole the show.
Sever drove in runs in the first, second and fourth innings and finished the day 3-5 with four RBI.
With Sever’s hot bat early, the Captains jumped out to a 7-2 lead by the fourth inning, but that was when South Bend started a comeback.
The Hawks cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth, and they could have made it even closer. But South Bend center fielder Breland Almadova was robbed of a two-run single on a spectacular diving catch from Lake County shortstop Dorssys Paulino.
The Hawks scored again in the fifth, but both bullpens stood firm late in the game as no more runs were tallied.
South Bend’s record falls to 62-39 on the season and 18-14 in the second half. Their next game comes Thursday night back at the Cove. They face off against the Captains again with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
