ATLANTA (AP) - The Cubs once again couldn't give Notre Dame alum Jeff Samardzija any run support on Saturday.
Samardzija lowered his ERA to 1.45, second in the NL, but he is still without a win this season after giving up no runs in six innings. With the game scoreless and Shark out of the game, the Cubs immediately gave up a run and went on to lose 2-0 to the Braves in Atlanta.
Samardijza now becomes the first pitcher in modern baseball history to go without a win in his first eight starts while giving up three runs or less in each game.
Ervin Santana pitched five-hit ball for seven innings to remain unbeaten and Ryan Doumit snapped the scoreless tie with a pinch-hit double in the seventh to lead the Braves.
Braves left fielder Justin Upton is day to day with a lower back muscle bruise after being hit by a pitch from Samardzija in the sixth and leaving the game.
Braves closer Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 10th save.
