One of the most heated rivalries in college football of the 1980's and 90's is renewed Saturday when Notre Dame hosts Miami at Chicago's Soldier Field.
The 9th ranked undefeated Irish beat the Canes two years ago in the Sun Bowl, but it's the battles from 25 years ago that people remember most.
None bigger than 1988--the famous fight in the tunnel and Jimmie Johnson going for two in the final minute looking to beat the Irish only to see Pat Terrell bat out the end zone toss as Notre Dame pulled off for the win over the #1 ranked Hurricanes. Notre Dame of course went on to win what has become their last national title.
Coverage for Notre Dame an Miami begins with NewsCenter 16 at 6 on Saturday live from Soldier Field.
"Countdown to Kickoff" takes over at 6:30pm on WNDU-TV. Jeff Jeffers and Angelo Di Carlo anchor your coverage right from the field at Soldier Field with Chuck Freeby holding down the fort back in South Bend.
Among the stories we will cover on "Countdown to Kickoff" include Notre Dame's 4-0 start, the history of the Miami-ND rivalry, the latest on the Irish QBs, an inside look at former Irish walk-on and Chicago native Chris Salvi and his battles in Bengal Bouts, the emergence of Stephon Tuitt and the incredible journey by Manti Te'o through tragedy over the last month.
The Irish and Canes then kickoff at 7:30 ET. You can watch it all on WNDU-TV.
Angelo, Jeff and Chuck will have complete post-game on NewsCenter 16 After the Game.
