Former Irish running back Ricky Watters has returned to Notre Dame to finish up his degree.
Watters played for the Irish from 1987 through 1989, helping them to a national championship in 1988. Then he decided to head to the NFL before finishing his degree at Notre Dame.
Now the Irish great has returned to campus to finish what he started.
"Obviously if you get a chance to go to the pros you have to go take advantage of that." Ricky said. "I always had in my heart and in my mind that I was going to come back and finish."
Ricky said one of his motivating factors for finishing his degree was setting a good example for his sons. He wanted to show them that it is important to start what you finish. Now Watters is about to do just that and he has enjoyed it every step of the way.
"It has been a great experience really," Watters said with a smile. "I didn't know how it would be having not been in a class room for 20 years. That sounds crazy but, it is true. Coming back in this fashion has been really great. My family has been here supporting me. I am actually having fun with it. It has been a lot of work, no doubt, we are talking about Notre Dame here, there are no shortcuts. But it has been a lot of fun."
