Remembering a true Clay Colonial: Chad Hudnall

The South Bend community lost one of its finest men last week.

On Monday, Clay baseball coach and math teacher Chad Hudnall was laid to rest. Thousands came out for his visitation on Sunday at the Palmer Funeral Home and Monday's funeral services had a standing room only crowd.

Hudnall is survived by his wife Cathy and four children.

He was a Clay graduate as well and a two sport start in baseball and basketball. Hudnall was one of the stars on the 1994 state basketball championship team.

"It will be something to remember for a lifetime," Hudnall told NewsCenter 16 back in March 1994 When you are an old man, you get to talk about it to your friends and just brag."

Tragically, a long battle with cancer would not allow Chad to grow into an old man. The battle ended last Thursday for Chad at the age of 37.

"Chad was very strong," Clay Athletic Director Joe Toth explains. "Mentally, physically and spiritually. He always thought he would win that battle."

Adams Athletic Director Bill Groves worked at Clay for 19 years. He was one of Chad's teachers.

"Chad Hudnall is a quality person that we are sad to miss and I'm just saddened by the loss of Chad Hudnall," Groves says emotionally.

Hudnall full filled a life long dream to become the Clay baseball coach in 2012 all while continuing his battle with bone cancer.

"He was a fighter," Groves says. "His teams took on the same personality. Very classy guy who did everything the right way but yeah he was a fighter."

And his team's did take on that personality. Last May, Chad's Colonials shocked the baseball world---when they won sectionals. Chad was so proud of his team after the game---crediting his players for all their hard work to make the championship run possible. It turned out to be the 2nd last game he'd ever coach.

"He knows that the Clay community loved him--loves his family and he will always be a part of Clay High School," Toth says.

Chad Hudnall---a fighter, a winner and a true Clay Colonial.
