There may not be two incoming freshmen in Notre Dame hoops history that are closer than Marian grad Demetrius Jackson and Penn grad Austin Torres.
The two were teammates in AAU and now are roommates and teammates at Notre Dame. Torres and Jackson are on campus taking classes and practicing with Mike Brey and the Irish.
So how are things going?
"You go," Torres says.
"No you, I'll get the next one," Jackson says politely to his best bud.
"Things are going pretty well so far," Torres said as I sat down with him and Jackson for an interview inside the Notre Dame locker room Tuesday.
Having the other right there every step of the way makes the transition to college so much easier.
"It's obviously helpful since we already have that bond," Torres explains. "We're just trying to expand that bond and start something new."
And that new thing is officially being at Notre Dame--where you can see first hand these guys feel right at home.
"it's surreal mainly because you never really thought college would come around," the highly recruited Jackson says. "The whole recruiting process drug on for so long. Now we are here. Now it's business and time to work hard and continue to get better where as in high school it wasn't as serious as a tone."
But don't let these guys fool you--clearly they are having fun.
"it's obviously a blessing to be here," says Torres. "This opportunity has been great for me and my family, great people surrounding me in the coaches and players. I'm going to work hard to prove myself."
For Jackson, the expectations are extremely high. Many are looking at him as possibly the Skylar Diggins of the men's program---someone people expect to contribute to this team right away. So is he eager to get to November already and see his college career begin?
"I'm not eager," Jackson admits. "I'm definitely excited to be able to do it but I'm not eager. I still have a lot of improvement to do in my own game. I'm trying to get better before I'm so eager to get out and play because I know college is a whole other level. so I'm trying to improve my game but I'm definitely excited to put on a Notre Dame uniform and be able to compete."
Give him a little bit. He'll be eager soon enough.
