Penn H.S. alum and Irish hoops freshman Torres needs surgery

Penn High School alum and Notre Dame hoops freshman Austin Torres will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Thursday, a Notre Dame spokesman confirms.

It's unclear how long that will keep Torres out, although he was already expected to redshirt his freshman season.

The injury does hurt his opportunities to continue to grow in the system during practices, however.

Torres was a standout hoops player at Penn High School last season, switching his commitment from Central Michigan to Notre Dame late in the process.

He played AAU basketball with fellow Irish freshman Demetrius Jackson of Marian High School. The two are the first local scholarship players to play for Mike Brey.
