Irish coach Brian Kelly says Notre Dame will need to bring a solid run game to North Texas on Saturday if his team is going to take out Arizona State in the Shamrock Series battle at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Kelly won't have freshman running back Greg Bryant at his disposal. Bryant has tendinitis in his knee and will miss at least the next four weeks.
Freshman quarterback Malik Zaire is also out of the mix unless there is an injury to Tommy Rees or Andrew Hendrix. Rees remains the unquestioned starter but we know how limited Tommy is in the running department.
Kelly plans to use Hendrix as the change of pace quarterback once again vs the Sun Devils as a way to add to the Irish run game. Hendrix saw his first action in the role last weekend against Oklahoma. Kelly says he noticed ND got a little more out of Hendrix this week at practice too.
"I thought he was a lot more engaged," Kelly said Thursday. "Just locked in a lot more relative to every little detail to the offense. I think you can probably hope to expect that from someone who played last week. I thought he had a great week. Really contributed to what we were doing this week."
Notre Dame and Arizona State will meet at 7:30 Saturday Night in Texas. You can see the game live on WNDU.
