For the second straight year, Notre Dame has raised more money for cancer care than any other school in the nation.

Wednesday, the Notre Dame softball team presented a check to Memorial's Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinc for more than $25-,000.

That is more than double last year's record-setting total.

The Irish raised the funds through their strike out cancer initiative.

Notre dame softball coach Deanna Gumpf has had her own personal brush with pediatric cancer. Her daughter, Tatum, was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago.

"When you first hear your child is diagnosed with leukemia or any kind of cancer, you feel like your whole world is over," said Gumpf. "And to look back, the people we've met, and the things we've been able to do, and how she has done so well, we're very fortunate. There's so many blessings that have come along with something that's really hard."

Tatum continues to make regular visits to Memorial, where she says she has a lot of friends, and is on her way to a full recovery.
