Marian High School is seriously considering a move from the Northern Indiana Conference to the Northern State Conference but the process is just beginning, Athletic Director Reggie Glon told me Thursday morning.
Marian was officially invited earlier this week and paperwork from the Northern State Conference indicates that the Knights have until October 15th to make a decision.
Glon says Marian had its first coaches meeting on Wednesday and will continue to have open dialogue with coaches, administrators, school board members, parents and student-athletes about what is in the best interest for the school. With that said, Glon said they are a ways away from making a final decision.
The makeover of the NSC began when Culver, Knox, LaVille and Triton decided to leave the conference to form a new one with smaller sized schools.
The NSC is currently down to four teams: Bremen, Glenn, Jimtown and New Prairie. According to Glon, Marian has been invited along with three other schools. What those other schools do would play a factor in Marian's decision.
"We wouldn't go if there was only five schools," Glon explained.
Glon said he's not at liberty to discuss who the other schools are that have been invited but said there are package deals going on that "if this school doesn't go, then this school won't either."
Glon says Marian has been pleased with its involvement in the NIC but that the Knights must think about all 19 of its sports and being able to be competitive across the board--not just in five sports.
Glon says Marian has informed the NIC that it is exploring its options and it will continue to have conversations with current NIC members.
"If Mishawaka, Penn and St. Joe says they aren't going to play us if we aren't in the NIC, that's something to look at because those are our biggest gates," Glon said.
Certainly keeping arch rival St. Joe on the schedule in any sport would be a high priority for the Knights if they were to leave.
Marian is currently the smallest schools in the NIC.
If Marian were to leave, the Northern Indiana Conference would be down to eight teams: Penn, Mishawaka, St. Joe, Elkhart Central, Washington, Adams, Riley and Clay.
Marian would certainly be a major pickup for the four remaining Northern State Conference teams.
